Mayor Sophie Barker selected for prestigious Harvard leadership programme

Mayor Sophie is in New York this week with Tauranga Mayor Mahe Drysdale, to mark the beginning of an international leadership programme focused on strengthening mayoral and local government leadership.

The mayors are the only Kiwi participants in the 10th Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, joining representatives from 16 other international cities and 22 American cities. Attendance in the prestigious programme is fully funded by the Initiative.

The programme runs for nine months, with the coursework including a mix of classroom sessions, virtual sessions, and project work in the field.

As a participant in the programme, Mayor Sophie also enters Bloomberg Philanthropies’ broader Government Innovation portfolio and global community of practice, with access to the knowledge base of tens of thousands of mayors and municipal officials.

Once the coursework ends, Mayor Sophie will remain eligible for ongoing professional education in economic development, human resources, procurement, and civic engagement.

To be eligible for selection, a mayor must oversee a population of at least 100,000, and have held office for five years or less. The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative assesses and selects participants based on their ability to demonstrate a strong commitment to strengthening mayoral leadership, improving council problem-solving capabilities, and delivering results for their residents.

More information on the programme itself is available here.
