Weather update #2

The MetService has now upgraded Dunedin to a Heavy Rain Warning – Red, with forecasts of 80 to 120 mm of rain expected over 24 hours. The heaviest falls are likely from late Sunday afternoon until early Monday morning when intensities of 10 to 15 mm/h are possible.

A road snowfall warning has also been issued for the Dunedin to Waitati highway (State Highway 1) from this afternoon until Monday afternoon. 5 to 10 cm of snow may accumulate on the road above 300 metres, but possibly as much as 30 cm near the summit.

Today’s rain is already causing some localised surface flooding on roads around the city and there is a risk of more, and slips in some locations, as the weather event continues.

Sandbagging stations are now open at the following locations:

• Dunedin Ice Stadium carpark, 101 Victoria Road, Saint Kilda
• Mosgiel Memorial Park gym carpark, 187D Gordon Road, Mosgiel

Contractors have been checking and clearing the city’s stormwater systems, sweeping gutters and checking mud tanks in low-lying and high-risk areas in preparation for this weather event. We are working hard to ensure the city is ready and all steps are taken to minimise any impacts, and our contractors and staff are on standby to respond to any incidents.

Flood protection barriers will also be installed in Surrey St later this afternoon.

We are also asking any residents who notice a blocked mud tank near their home to clear debris on to the footpath if they are able to, where it will be picked up by contractors when the weather clears.
