Proposed changes to accommodate the Tunnels Trail

The Tunnels Trail is a project to build a 15km cycle and walking trail between Dunedin and Mosgiel.

Consultation closed as of midnight, Tuesday 24 October 2023. Thank you for your feedback.

The Tunnels Trail will provide a safe and accessible route that can be used by everyone for either recreation or commuting. To achieve this, we are proposing some changes to the existing street layout at two locations, and we’d like feedback from residents on the proposed designs.

Paterson St/Runciman St, Abbotsford

Part of the trail runs through Abbotsford and is proposed to follow Paterson Street and Runciman Street before continuing along Neill Street. To achieve this, we are proposing some changes to the existing street layout.

Please view the maps below. An overview of the proposed changes is as follows:

  • Paterson Street (between North Taieri Road and Alexander Street) will be closed off to motorised vehicles and become the dedicated pedestrian and cycle trail.
  • Paterson St will become one-way between Teignmouth Street and Alexander Street.
  • A signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing will be installed at North Taieri Road.
  • A cycle lane will be installed along Runciman Street and Neill Street.
  • New no parking lines will be introduced or extended:
    • On Paterson Street and a small section of Teignmouth Street.
    • On Paterson Street, between Runciman Street and Alexander Street.
    • On the east side of Alexander Street, up to properties 1 and 1A Alexander Street.

Gladstone Road North, Mosgiel

Part of the Tunnels Trail follows along Gladstone Road North, so we are proposing some changes to the road to accommodate this.

Please view the maps below. An overview of the proposed changes is as follows:

  • Introduction of road markings between Magazine Road and approximately 50m to the east of Paterson Road to indicate that this particular section of road is shared use and part of a dedicated cycleway (the ‘Tunnels Trail’).
  • Raised asphalt platforms/thresholds at five different locations.
  • A parking area adjacent to Gladstone Road North between property numbers 282 and 292.
