Proposed parking changes on Wakari Road

The Dunedin City Council is proposing improvements on Wakari Road to provide a safer and more connected route for residents and area commuters—motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. As a result of more development in the area, there has been an increase in local traffic volume and road enhancements will help ensure safety for all road users.

At the intersection of Wakari Road and Helensburgh Road, we are proposing a roundabout with improved crossings for pedestrians. We are also proposing a new two-metre-wide shared path (for pedestrians and uphill-bound cyclists only) on the west side of Wakari Road, from the roundabout to the existing footpath at the top of the hill, near 181 Wakari Road.

Nearby, at the Helensburgh Road and Centennial Avenue intersection,  we are proposing new crossing points and kerb buildouts to improve pedestrian safety. Where traffic volumes increase as a result of more development in the future, we may also consider other speed calming measures in the area.

The map below captures the proposed safety enhancements, including the roundabout, raised crossings, traffic islands, line markings and shared path, as well as the intersection improvements at Centennial Ave and Helensburgh Road.

Feedback is now open on the proposed parking changes required to implement the roundabout and pedestrian crossings.  To ensure that intersection changes and sight lines are safe for everyone, we are proposing to install no stopping lines as indicated on the map below, which may have effects on parking availability in the area.
