DCC to poll public over electoral system

The Dunedin City Council has voted to hold a poll to determine the electoral system to be used for future DCC elections.

The vote follows a Notice of Motion put forward by Councillor Andrew Simms, considered at today’s Council meeting, which Councillors voted 8-5 to support.

Those voting in favour of the motion were: Deputy Mayor Lucas and Councillors Chambers, Galer, Lund, Simms, Treadwell, Vandervis and Weatherall.

Those against were: Councillors Garey, Hall, Laufiso, Mayhem and Walker.

The decision means a poll to determine the voting system for DCC elections will be held in conjunction with the 2028 local body elections.

It will ask electors to choose between First Past the Post (FPP) or the Single Transferable Voting (STV) systems for subsequent elections, beginning in 2031.

Holding the poll as part of the 2028 election will cost $40,000. The alternative, running a separate poll if one is triggered by a petition, would cost an estimated $400,000, a staff report said.
