Keeping of Animals Bylaw under review

The Dunedin City Council is reviewing the Keeping of Animals Bylaw and wants to know what residents think about any problems relating to keeping animals in Dunedin.

An online survey (www.dunedin.govt.nz/consultation) is open from 1 May to 5pm Friday 15 May 2026.

Five years ago, the DCC worked with the community in amending the bylaw to include prohibitions around the keeping of roosters in residential areas (unless with written permission).

This review of the bylaw was promised to make sure those amendments are working as intended.

There may be other issues residents want to raise, e.g., around beekeeping in Dunedin. Public feedback like this will help us with our bylaw review.

The DCC plans further public consultation later this year about any proposed changes to the bylaw.

Specific rules around the control of cats are not included in this bylaw because its purpose is to protect the health and safety of the public, rather than wildlife. The control of dogs in Dunedin is covered by a separate Dog Control Bylaw.
