Latest Moray Place and George Street upgrades to get underway

Work to resurface parts of upper Moray Place and George Street is set to begin this week.

From the evening of Tuesday 5 May, contractors will start work to address some of the aging road and asphalt in George Street between the Octagon and Moray Place, and upper Moray Place between George Street and Harrop Street. The work involves milling the road, raising surface covers and laying new asphalt, and will be done overnight to minimise disruption to road users.

Both sections where the work is being done will be closed to traffic overnight between 7pm - 6am from Tuesday 5 May, with full access resuming on the morning of Monday, 11 May. The resurfacing is expected to take five nights, but may be delayed due to weather conditions.

Traffic access to both areas of George Street and Moray Place will remain open during the day.

On-street parking in the work zone will be unavailable at all times while the project is underway to make way for heavy roadwork machinery and ensure safe access for contractors.

The Dunedin Public Library carpark will also close at an earlier time of 6pm while the roadworks are happening. Visitors to the library and carpark should ensure their vehicles are out of the building before it closes overnight from Tuesday until Sunday. The work will have a slight impact on the Dunedin Library’s Bookbus schedule. Please check the Libraries’ website for more information.

Bus stops within the work area will be shifted while the work is underway. Bus users should keep an eye on the Otago Regional Council Orbus alerts page for information regarding any changes to stop zones.

As the resurfacing work requires heavy construction machinery, there may be some disruption to road and footpath users. The contractors will aim to complete the work as soon as possible and minimise any impact to the public.

Line marking will go in as soon as possible once the work is complete. The work will be weather dependent and there may be some delays.

Keep an eye on our road closures website for information on the work schedule: www.dunedin.govt.nz/roadworks
