Work is underway on a project to replace almost 13km of old and poorly performing water, wastewater and stormwater pipes in North East Valley (NEV). The pipes are up to 100 years old and have begun to deteriorate.
Work on water pipes will improve the area’s drinking water and result in better fire flows, fewer burst pipes and unplanned shutdowns, and improved water pressure. Replacing wastewater pipes will reduce the overflows that cause manholes to pop up in heavy rain.
We will work with the contractor to minimise disruption to residents. However, the work will involve traffic management (including some road closures) and water shutdowns when the new pipes are connected and the old pipes are decommissioned. Please be aware that as we are replacing both drinking water and drainage pipes (including sewerage), a lot of care must be taken to avoid any cross contamination which usually means that the sewer and drinking water pipes are not worked on in the same area at the same time – we may need to visit your street more than once. If work is scheduled for your street, the contractor will notify you beforehand and let you know about any disruptions.
If you have any general questions or concerns about this project, please contact our Customer Services team on 03 477 4000 or email us at nevrenewals@dcc.govt.nz.
