We are currently replacing approximately 11km of aging pipes in the Kaikorai Valley Hills area. This is a continuation of network renewals in the Kaikorai Valley wastewater catchment. The wastewater pipes in this area are over 75 years old and are increasingly prone to breakages, blockages and allowing stormwater to infiltrate.
While these works are primarily focused on renewing our aging wastewater pipes, to help minimise disruption to residents, we will also be replacing or renewing water and stormwater assets that are either undersized or also reaching the end of their useful lives.
The Project
The map below shows the six work areas, with work having started in area 1 in August 2024. We may have multiple areas underway with works at the same time to speed up the installation.

Chapman Street area pipe renewals work areas
-
Area 1 – Chapman Street area
Work started in August 2024 to replace and renew the water, stormwater and wastewater pipes in Chapman Street, Burt Street and Rosebank Avenue. This stage was carried out by Fulton Hogan and completed in April 2025.
-
Area 2 – Greenhill Ave area
Work is planned to commence in Area 2 and 3 in December 2025 to replace the water, stormwater and wastewater pipes in the roadway and within private properties. The initial work prior to Christmas will include non-invasive work (e.g., filming, relining) or trenchless methods to help minimise any disruption over the holiday break. We will be in contact with affected residents prior to work restarting in the new year to advise what to expect. It is currently projected that this work will be complete by November 2026.
-
Area 3 – Prospect Bank
Work is planned to commence in Area 2 and 3 in December 2025 to replace the water, stormwater and wastewater pipes in the roadway and within private properties. The initial work prior to Christmas will include non-invasive work (e.g., filming, relining) or trenchless methods to help minimise any disruption over the holiday break. We will be in contact with affected residents prior to work restarting in the new year to advise what to expect. It is currently projected that this work will be complete by November 2026.
-
Area 4 – Craighall Crescent
Construction in this area is currently forecast to take place over the 2026/2027 financial year, with a combination of work required in the roadway as well as private property.
-
Area 5 - Lynn Street
Work started in April 2025 to replace and renew the water and wastewater pipes located in the roadway in Lynn Street, from Chapman Street to Mayfield Avenue. This stage was carried out by Fulton Hogan and completed in November 2025.
Further work is still required to renew wastewater and stormwater pipes located within private properties. A timeline for this work is yet to be confirmed. It is likely that these pipes will be re-lined. We will be in touch with affected property owners and residents once this work is planned and confirmed.
-
Area 6 – Lower Chapman Street
This section has been deferred to be carried out at a later time. There is currently no timeline for this work to take place.
We will work with the contractor to minimise disruption to residents. However, the work will involve traffic management (including road closures) and water shutdowns when the new pipes are connected and the old pipes are decommissioned. Please be aware that as we are replacing both drinking water and drainage pipes (including sewerage), a lot of care must be taken to avoid any cross contamination which usually means that the sewer and drinking water pipes are not worked on in the same area at the same time – we may need to visit your street more than once. If work is scheduled for your street, the contractor will notify you beforehand and let you know about any disruptions.
