Water shutdowns(1)

Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

Growth project - Mosgiel

This project will deliver new water and wastewater infrastructure to support residential development in the area. All new pipework will be installed within road verges or footpaths in accordance with the Dunedin City Council (DCC) standards, with connections designed to improve network resilience, maintain service to existing properties, and support future growth. Construction is planned to start in Bush Road, between Carlyle Road and the entrance to Wal’s, from late March. It is currently expected that the overall project will be complete by October 2026. Please see the options below for more information on the affected areas.

Bush Road (approximately from Brown Street to Wal’s Plant Land entrance)

Construction of a new 300mm wastewater gravity main along Bush Road will connect the development to the existing public network. We will also need to connect all of the properties in this area to the new sewer. A new watermain will also be installed along Bush Road, including approximately 170m within the road corridor and a further connection via Lot 1 (service corridor). This will connect to the existing water mains and replace sections of older pipework, improving reliability and future capacity.

This work is set to commence in April 2026 and will involve digging trenches to install the new DCC pipes, as well as connecting the private laterals from each property. Due to the nature of the work, Bush Road will be affected by traffic management throughout construction. Our contractor will work with affected residents to maintain property access as much as possible.

Lanark Street

Approximately 13m of new watermain will extend the existing 100mm steel main, including installation of valves and thrust restraint to provide a further feed into the development. It is currently expected that this work will begin in early May, we will notify directly affected residents prior to work starting.

Ayr Street

Additional watermain connections and upgrades will tie into the existing reticulation network, strengthening supply reliability for both the new development and surrounding properties. Around 10m of new watermain will extend the existing 150mm main, creating an additional supply point to strengthen network resilience. It is currently expected that this work will be carried out in late May to early June, we will notify directly affected residents prior to work starting. It is currently expected that this work will be carried out in June, we will notify directly affected residents prior to work starting.

Mure Street

Approximately 10m of new watermain will extend the existing 100mm steel main. A new fire hydrant and valve assembly will be installed to enable safe operation and flushing. It is currently expected that this work will be carried out in June, we will notify directly affected residents prior to work starting.

Inglis Street

Five new water supply connections will be constructed, along with sections of a new watermain forming part of a ring main to improve network resilience, maintain pressure, and provide compliant fire-fighting flows, approximately 46m of new watermain will be constructed and connected to the existing 150mm main in Shaw Street, forming part of a new ring main to improve pressure and fire-fighting flows. It is currently expected that this work will be carried out in late June to early July, we will notify directly affected residents prior to work starting.

We will work with the contractor to minimise disruption to residents where possible. However, the work will involve traffic management (including some road closures) and water shutdowns when the new pipes are connected and the old pipes are decommissioned. Please be aware that as we are replacing both drinking water and drainage pipes (sewerage), a lot of care must be taken to avoid any cross contamination which usually means that the sewer and drinking water pipes are not worked on in the same area at the same time – we may need to visit your street more than once.  If work is scheduled for your street, the contractor will notify you beforehand and let you know about any disruptions.
