Port Chalmers pipeline renewals

Dunedin City Council (DCC) is progressing planning for the renewal of three waters infrastructure in Port Chalmers, focused on improving the resilience and performance of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater networks.

The programme is being delivered in stages within the zones shown below:

Port Chalmers pipeline renewal

The initial priority will focus on potable water renewals in Zone A to align with upcoming funding and construction timeframes. This will be supported by targeted upgrades to wastewater and stormwater networks, including a greater use of trenchless relining techniques to reduce disruption where appropriate.

Over the coming months, a range of site investigations will be carried out across the area to inform the detailed design. These investigations will include CCTV inspections, surveying, and geotechnical and contaminated land assessments to better understand existing ground and asset conditions. The results will help refine the design and confirm the most appropriate renewal methods before construction begins.

Construction of the Zone A watermain renewals is expected to begin later in 2026. This initial package will be followed by additional wastewater and stormwater renewal works, which will be procured as subsequent stages of the programme.
