Rotary Park water main renewal

The Peninsula drinking water pipeline has been supplying water to local communities for many decades. In some areas, the pipeline is now more than 60 years old and runs through steep and hard to access land. As it ages, it becomes more vulnerable to damage, particularly in areas prone to slips.

To ensure a reliable drinking water supply, the Dunedin City Council (DCC) is renewing this pipeline as part of its wider Three Waters infrastructure programme. Around 5.5 km of pipeline is planned to be renewed between Rotary Park and the MacAndrew Bay Reservoir, including sections of Highcliff Road, Irvine Road, Portobello Road, Marion Street, Jane Street and Featherston Street. We are currently undertaking design investigation work to support detailed design and construction planning. Some of this activity may be visible in the area.

Construction is currently anticipated to begin in the later part of 2026, although final timing and sequencing of the works are still to be confirmed.
