Town Belt Reserve Management Plan review

Dunedin’s Town Belt covers 202 hectares across several hill suburbs and is the city’s most high profile reserve. It is one of only three Victorian Town Belts in the world, established in 1848.

We’re asking for the views of residents in the wider Dunedin area on the future of the Town Belt. Your feedback will help shape our review of the management plan for the Town Belt.

Why do we need a management plan for this area?

Under the Reserves Act 1977, we’re required to review the management plan to ensure the Town Belt is properly managed. Under the Act, we must consult with the public when we create or review a reserve management plan.

This plan will outline our role in current and future planning, development and management of the area. It will allow us to respond to our community’s changing needs, introduce best practice models and trends and enable efficient and effective use of the area.

What’s included in this plan?

Arthur Street Cemetery, Belleknowes Golf and Croquet Clubs, Cosy Dell, Jubilee Park, Littlebourne Ground, Moana Pool, Montecillo Ground, Mornington Park, Northern Cemetery, Opoho Park, Prospect Park, Roberts Park, Robin Hood Park, Southern Cemetery, the Oval, Unity Park and Woodhaugh Gardens. It includes 22 sports grounds.

Stage 2 consultation

The Dunedin City Council is asking for submissions on the future of the Town Belt.

The views of residents in the wider Dunedin area are being sought on the Town Belt, which covers 202 hectares across several hill suburbs and is the city’s most high-profile reserve. One of only three Victorian Town Belts in the world, it is recognised and appreciated by Dunedin people for its recreational, landscape, amenity, ecological, cultural, historical and educational values.

Feedback will help to shape the Draft Dunedin Town Belt Reserve Management Plan.

Earlier this year, we staged our initial consultation process, inviting people to provide feedback about the Town Belt, how they use it, what its problems are and how they can be solved.

As we embark on the second stage of consultation, we encourage the public to share their ideas on ways they think the area can be improved and what activities they would like here in the future.

This feedback will help us make good decisions about how the Town Belt is used and protected.

Stage 2 - What you told us

Management plan reviews

We’re currently reviewing all our Parks and Recreation management plans.

As required by the Reserves Act 1977, all Dunedin reserves must be administered by a management plan. They set out policies for management and use of reserves.

We carry out consultation in two stages; in the first stage, the DCC asks for residents’ opinions on new or current plans that need updating. Stage one feedback guides and influences the new draft plans.

In the second stage, residents can have their say on the draft plans. Feedback is considered by the Council and fed into the final plan.
