Getting Dunedin’s Gears Ready for the Aotearoa Bike Challenge

The Dunedin City Council is joining Love to Ride in encouraging Dunedin residents to hop on their bikes for the annual Aotearoa Bike Challenge in February 2025.

Since 2016, the Aotearoa Bike Challenge (ABC) has celebrated the benefits of cycling to encourage Dunedin people – whether they’re a newcomer, every-now-and-again-er, or avid cyclist – to give it a go.

In 2024, 1260 individuals and 78 organisations registered for the challenge.

“Biking and cycling is a great way to get out and about to see our city. No matter where you are in your cycling journey, this is a chance for people to challenge themselves and make the most of what this city has to offer,” says Dunedin City Councillor Steve Walker.

Councillor Walker has participated in the ABC for many years, and says it has been a great way to connect with our city.

Dunedin offers people an array of biking and cycling spaces to choose from, including the Te Aka Ōtākou shared pathway, the Signal Hill and Whare Flat mountain bike tracks, the new Mosgiel pump track and the many cycleways across our city, so there’s plenty of options for everyone wanting to hop on their bike.”

The ABC is a friendly challenge where people register individually or as part of their workplace, record their rides and encourage others to do the same.

Throughout February, ABC participants will have opportunities to win a range of prizes, including clothing, food and bike vouchers. Anyone who signs up to the challenge before 24 December 2024, including one of five $200 vouchers generously donated by Dunedin Bike House.

In support of the ABC, Spokes Dunedin will be hosting a bike breakfast on Tuesday, 18 February at the Dunedin Railway Station, offering cyclists a free breakfast, the chance to meet fellow cyclers, a free bike tune-up, and opportunity to check out some of the newest e-bikes on the market.
