Hundreds of children set to take part in Orange Day Parade

More than 500 primary school children will don fluoro-orange vests and converge on Dunedin’s CBD for the Orange Day Parade on Friday.

The parade kicks off a day of celebration for Dunedin children who volunteer for their school road patrol teams, along with the teachers and parents who support them.

This is the first time the street parade has been held since 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions and George Street upgrade works.

The children will set off from the Dental School at 9.45am on Friday 29 November, before making their way down George Street to the Octagon.

Dunedin’s Deputy Mayor, Cherry Lucas, will congratulate the road patrollers when they reach the Octagon, before they are treated to a swim and a barbeque lunch at Moana Pool.

“We’re excited to be bringing the Orange Day Parade back to city streets this year, after several years’ absence,” says Deputy Mayor Lucas.

“It’s a fun way to show our appreciation for the children’s exceptional efforts – in all weathers – to keep school crossings safe throughout the year.”

Twenty schools are taking part in this year’s Orange Day Parade, which is organised by the Dunedin City Council and Dunedin Police.
