South Dunedin Schools

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Dunedin City Council are jointly working on making streets around schools safer and encouraging more children to walk, cycle, scoot and bus more often.

Background

There are 12 schools in the South Dunedin area with many children travelling to and from school every day. Most streets around schools are congested and perceived as unsafe for young children to walk, scoot or cycle to school on their own resulting in parents not feeling comfortable letting them do so.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Dunedin City Council are jointly working on making streets around schools feel safer and encourage more children to walk, cycle, scoot and bus more often.

In 2023, Council approved a 30 km/h speed limit reduction outside all Dunedin schools.

DCC received Government funding from the now-closed Transport Choices programme included within the Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for the South Dunedin Schools project. The money has been used to improve intersections, bus stops, and install safer crossing points around eight of the 12 South Dunedin schools. This will be packaged with teaching children of all 12 schools the skills to safely walk, cycle, scoot and take the bus. DCC’s school travel planning team has been working closely with each school to put together a programme that provides for them and their students.

The South Dunedin Schools project aims to increase the number of students and parents walking, cycling, scooting and using public transport to get to and from school. We are improving infrastructure and teaching skills to ensure that tamariki can safely get to and from their schools independently.

Have your say

We are proposing a series of design changes to some streets around the 12 South Dunedin Schools, such as installing safe crossing points, and improving bus stops and intersections to make it easier for people to get around. View the planned changes and let us know what you think through our feedback survey. We want to know if you think our proposed changes would make your whanau feel safer getting to and from school, no matter whether they walk, cycle, scoot, bus or drive.
