Bath street upgrade FAQs

FAQs

  • What are we doing?

We’re replacing degraded underground pipes along Bath Street. These include a watercourse pipe and water, stormwater and sewer pipelines. When the new pipes have been installed, we then intend to upgrade the road surface of Bath Street.

  • Why are we doing this work?

The pipes are old and badly deteriorated. Most date back to the 1800s. This work aims to future proof them for at least 100 years.

  • How will this work affect businesses and the public?

Work requires us to close of parts of Bath Street to vehicles, however pedestrian access to all businesses will be maintained. See our project timeline at Bath Street Pipe Upgrade

  • Where are the current pipes located?

  • Who do I contact if I have questions?

    Email bathstreetupgrades@dcc.govt.nz.

  • How will disruption to car park access be managed?

Contractors will work closely with retailers and building owners to ensure access is maintained during construction. Work will be carried out at night where possible so people can still access off-street parking. The re-opening of the Lower Moray Place car park building will provide alternative parking. Free parking is available for the first 15 minutes at this car park building.

  • How will this affect residents?

Construction will be carried out at appropriate times to minimise noise disruptions.

  • What will happen if nothing is done?

There is a risk of the watercourse pipe collapsing, a sinkhole being created and flooding. Ongoing maintenance costs are high.

  • What will happen if there is an archaeological find?

The project will have to pause while NZ Heritage Properties investigates.

  • How are you communicating with stakeholders?

Throughout the project, we are actively communicating with affected property and business owners through face-to-face conversations, letters, emails and regular project newsletters. Read our newsletters at Bath Street Pipe Upgrade
