Princes Street is well used by people travelling from the south of the city, which is where 65% of daily car trips originate from.
Princes Street runs through the heart of our city and is well used by many people every day to either travel through or visit shops, their workplace, their home or recreational spaces. It forms Dunedin’s main bus corridor and walking route from the south and many cars use the street to travel into town or to the hill suburbs.
Princes St has a number of problems that this project seeks to address. In particular, the project aims to:
* Improve road safety, especially for pedestrians and at intersections
* Improve bus reliability and efficiency
* Improve safety and access for people who walk, cycle and have disabilities.
In 2022 we asked the public how they currently use Princes St, what problems they see with it and how they would like to see it changed in the future. Public feedback was analysed, and a summary can be viewed here.
Based on your feedback and technical analyses, we have developed improvement proposals for Princes St.
We will consult with the public on those proposed changes once we know whether we will have implementation funding allocated in the DCC 9 Year plan and the National Land Transport Plan (for Waka Kotahi co-funding).
Central City Plan
Princes Street is also part of a larger project, known as the Central City Plan. The Central City Plan is divided into quarters, one of which is the Creative Quarter which encompasses Princes Street (George Street is part of the Retail Quarter). The Princes Street Connections project is separate and focuses specifically on transport and safety issues.
