About this track

The Switchback Track at Nicols Creek is designed to be ridden both up and down, offering a rewarding and technical experience for confident riders. The track weaves through native forest, featuring countless switchbacks, rocky sections, and boardwalks.

Originally built by Hamish Seaton and Mountain Biking Otago with support from the Corrections Department, the track has been progressively upgraded. By 2025, the entire 8 km route was fully gravelled, providing a durable surface from the Leith Valley to the Swampy Summit Trail.

Track features

• Flowing native bush singletrack with switchbacks and rocky sections
• Gravel surface with some rooty and uneven terrain
• Easy climbing gradient (3–6 degrees)
• Steeper walking track near the top
• Best ridden in dry conditions

When to ride: After a spell of dry weather.
When not to ride: After heavy rain — tracks can become muddy and easily damaged.

Directions

The track entrance is located on Leith Valley Road, there is parking on the side of the road. If using Google maps if you follow instructions to “Nicols Creek MTB tracks” you will find yourself in the right location. HOWEVER, the mountain biking tracks follow the creek upstream on the righthand side of the creek, while Glowworms and the Waterfall walking tracks are on the left-hand side.

No Bus access to this track - you will need your own car.

Nicols Creek - Switchback Track Mountain Biking Trail - Dunedin

Descending from Swampy Summit:

From the Bullring, take the Swampy Summit Track up to the ridge, then turn right onto the Nicols Creek Track (watch for the small stake and sign). Continue until you reach DCC signs — carry your bike a short distance and turn left onto the Moon Track (Nicols Falls Track). This connects to the MTB section. Please take care and avoid skidding — the Moon Track is well used by walkers and runners.

Know before you go:

Expect a challenging descent with steep edges — please ride with care and be mindful of other users.

Some sections may be muddy after rain.
