This route takes you in a circuit around Port Chalmers’s best gems! Linking Old Cemetery, Scott’s Memorial, Centenary Lookout, Port Chalmers Cemetery and Lady Thorn Dell, the walk is a visually gorgeous and interesting from start to finish.

About this track

This loop track takes you on a circuit through Port Chalmers’ hidden gems, linking together some of the town’s most scenic and historic landmarks — including the Old Cemetery, Scott’s Memorial, Centenary Lookout, Port Chalmers Cemetery, and Lady Thorn Dell.

The route utilises the Rangi Loop Track and Brailleys Track to create an interesting and breathtaking journey through the forested slopes of the Port Chalmers Town Belt. Expect some steep sections and uneven terrain, rewarded by spectacular harbour views, historic features, and peaceful forest stretches along the way.

Regular bus services from Central Dunedin make this track an excellent option for a day trip — enjoy a walk through the hills followed by a coffee or meal at one of Port Chalmers’ local cafés. Whether you’re a visitor or a local explorer, this loop offers a rewarding challenge and a true taste of Port Chalmers’ charm.

Directions

Start on Church Street next to the Port Chalmers Substation. There is plenty of parking next to the Substation or walk up from Port Chalmers centre.

Busses from Central Dunedin to Port Chalmers go regularly. Take Bus Route 14.

Know before you go:

Take the time to look around! The Lady Thorn Dell Garden is managed by the Port Chalmers & District Lions Association and has a large collection of plants and will have blooming rhododendrons from Spring through Summer. While the cemetery is a beautifully manicured space in the forest, which is a peaceful retreat to look around.
