Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

Water services map

These maps show the location of 3 Waters services around Dunedin.

The Water Services Map displays the known location of all the Dunedin City Council (DCC) managed water, stormwater and waste water reticulation networks. It does not include most privately owned and managed services or other utilities. The map is primarily intended for use by utility contractors and professionals to aid the planning of their work.

Information shown is the best available at the time the request is made as shows the indicative location of assets. The accuracy and completeness of the information is variable and depends on the quality of the original data source used for this map. The DCC may not have been notified about unauthorised changes to its assets.

The information provided to you may also not reflect authorised changes as a result of very recent work. We recommend that you apply for a LIM report to identify important characteristics of land adjacent to your worksite.

  • Elevation standard changed to NZVD2016

    Official Dunedin height measurements

As of 10 April 2025 DCC has adopted the New Zealand Vertical Datum 2016 (NZVD2016) as the standard for elevation data. This replaces Dunedin 1958 and Otago Metric Datum.

NZVD2016 is the official vertical datum and is used to define heights in New Zealand and its offshore islands.

    Adopting the new standard

Many heights around New Zealand have been referenced to a local sea level, or local vertical datum (LVD).

Sea level is not a flat or consistent surface - it varies around the coast and is impacted by weather, currents, salinity and tidal forces. It is also dependent on gravity from the sun and moon, so it takes more than 18 years of observations to measure a full tidal cycle. Most occupations to determine tide gauge reference heights are significantly shorter than 18 years so networks which have been determined using different reference points, or at different reference times, usually have different heights.

In contrast NZVD2016 heights are determined in relation to a static and stable reference surface, New Zealand Quasigeoid 2016 (NZGeoid2016).

By adopting NZVD2016 we are ensuring Dunedin data makes use of the latest high quality elevation information available.

Datum data for current and future projects

If you supply information to us that contains elevation data, you must submit it using a specific datum, depending on when your project started.

Projects started before 9 April 2025

These projects may be submitted using either NZVD2016 Otago Metric Datum, or Dunedin 1958 and must clearly be identified as to which standard is used.

Projects started after 10 April 2025

These projects must be submitted using NZVD2016, with the exception that you may supply information using Otago Datum or DUN1958 for projects if:

    • designed before 10 April 2025 that include topographical surveys, engineering plans for resource consent, flood reports and work related to elevation.
    • approved by DCC on a case-by-case basis.

These projects should clearly be identified as to which standard is used.
