Temporary Alcohol Ban

The Dunedin City Council has resolved to implement a ‘Temporary Alcohol Ban’ pursuant to section 5.2 of the Alcohol (Control of Alcohol in Public Places) Bylaw 2004.  The area covered by the Temporary Ban is described as being the area encompassed by Albany Street, Riego Street, Harbour Terrace and Dundas Street, Butts Road, Union Street, State Highway 88 and ANZAC Avenue back to Albany Street (depicted in the map below).

The ban prohibits the consumption of alcohol in, the bringing of alcohol into, and the possession of alcohol in the defined area between 12 midday and 12 midnight on the following day:

  • Saturday 19 September 2026 (Southern Sounds)

Exemptions:

  • People carrying unopened alcohol from outside the ban area to licensed premises; and,
  • Residents, and their guests, carrying unopened alcohol to and from their residences within the ban area; and,
  • Those areas covered by a ‘special licence’ for the period covered by the licence.

Every person who breaches this Bylaw commits an offence under section 239 of the Local Government Act 2002 and is liable to a fine of $250 by way of an infringement notice issued by the Police.
