Proposed parking changes at Bush Road and Forfar Street intersection

The Dunedin City Council is planning safety improvements at the intersection of Bush Road and Forfar Street. This project aims to enhance safety for people walking across Bush Road, including children getting to and from school.

Earlier this year, the Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board identified several locations where crossing facilities could be improved to enhance pedestrian safety. The Bush Road/Forfar Street intersection was identified as a priority because it is located on a key route used by children travelling to and from Elmgrove School.

What is proposed?

As part of these improvements, the existing intersection will be upgraded to include safety measures for people walking. The proposed changes from the existing layout are:

  • Two new pedestrian refuge islands on Bush Road, one either side of Forfar Street which will enable a two-stage crossing for people crossing the road
  • New kerb build outs on Forfar Street to narrow the intersection and provide a shorter crossing distance for pedestrians
  • the addition of yellow no stopping lines between 12-16 Bush Road and 11-19 Bush Road. By preventing vehicles from parking close to the crossing, visibility will be improved and the crossing will be safer and easier to use.
