Feedback welcomed on Musselburgh centre spruce-up

The Dunedin City Council (DCC) is planning to refresh the commercial centre of Musselburgh and is inviting public feedback on the preliminary concept designs.

As part of our Centres Upgrade Programme, the DCC will upgrade neighbourhood centres around the city where minor amenity improvements can be made. The first cab off the rank is Musselburgh, with $300,000 allocated for improvements through the 9 Year Plan.

“The centre of Musselburgh was last refreshed in the 1990s, so it is due for a spruce-up to ensure it continues to be a vibrant and welcoming place to live, work and visit,” says Mike Cartwright, City Growth and Advisory Services Manager.

The proposed enhancements are to the commercial area of Musselburgh Rise, on both sides of the street around the intersection of Moana Crescent and Cavell Street. These include:

  • renewing footpaths with a combination of paving and asphalt
  • new rubbish bins and seating
  • new plantings
  • installing a raised zebra crossing in place of the existing zebra crossing, to improve pedestrian safety.

There will be no change in the number of on-street parking spaces, as parking is outside the scope of the project.

“We’re really interested to hear the public’s thoughts on our concept drawings to help us refine and develop the design. This project is still in the early design stage, and the proposed improvements could change as a result of community and stakeholder feedback and cost considerations.”

Members of the project team will be in the Musselburgh centre this afternoon, between 3pm and 4pm, to hear people’s thoughts and answer questions about the planned upgrades.

The public can also provide feedback by email to UrbanDesign@dcc.govt.nz by Monday 15 December.

Once the designs are finalised, the physical works will be completed in May/June 2026.

“We expect this will take several weeks to complete, but we’ll know more as the project progresses and will share more details when we have them,” says Mr Cartwright.

“The works will likely cause some disruption, however this is a small project and we will work hard to minimise any inconvenience to businesses and residents.”
