Parking time restrictions come into effect for St Clair

Time restrictions for parking spaces in parts of the Esplanade at St Clair have now come into effect.

Dunedin City Council recently agreed to add time limitations to vehicle parks along Forbury Road, the Esplanade and Second Beach Road at St Clair to increase parking turnover and availability.

DCC Group Manager Transport Jeanine Benson says the Esplanade and surrounding streets have not had many time restrictions in the past, but feedback from the public and local businesses suggested the lack of time limits has inhibited the amount of short-term parking available for visitors.

“This hasn’t always been a large problem, but some overstayers has caused issues for visitors and

locals alike, as well as presented a safety issue,”

The change aims to support local businesses and the community by increasing parking availability and visitor numbers.

“This will be especially important as we head into summer and the weather heats up, as St Clair is a

popular spot for locals and visitors to the city,” Ms Benson says.

The time restrictions range from P5 (5-minute), P120 (2-hour) and P240 (4-hour). Two parks will also be changed to variable zones so they can be assigned as bookable mobile trading spaces during peak times.

New short stay time restrictions will improve safety in the area and reduce instances of illegal stopping on yellow lines and in the traffic lane.

All parks remain free of charge but will have restrictions on the time allowed for vehicles to stay. Parking in the DCC managed carpark overlooking the Esplanade and ocean remains unrestricted.

The time restrictions now apply, but a grace period will be in effect for a few weeks to raise awareness and ensure the public gets used to the change before it is in enforced.

Feedback was sought from the public on the proposed changes earlier in the year.
