The Dunedin City Council is encouraging everyone to take extra care during today’s strong winds.
With MetService issuing an Orange wind warning, with gusts of up to 120km/h expected, damage to trees, powerlines and roofs could occur.
DCC General Manager City Services Scott McLean says, “These winds are strong enough to bring down powerlines, fell trees and disrupt travel plans, so we’re encouraging everyone to take care, stay home if possible and only travel if needed.
“Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles. If you do need to be out and about, please stay away from large trees if possible, as branches may also come down during severe gusts.”
We encourage everyone to:
- Secure or bring inside objects that can be picked up or broken.
- Remove any debris or loose items from around your property.
- Take care when driving
- Use bin latches if your kerbside waste and recycling is due for collection
- Consider putting bins out on your next collection day if they are not full.
- Stay away from trees and wooded areas.
At this stage no DCC services or facilities are affected, but staff are monitoring the weather situation closely.
