What we achieved
From enhancing infrastructure to celebrating culture and protecting our environment, our commitment to Ōtepoti Dunedin resulted in remarkable progress between 2021 and 2024.
Key highlights included the celebration of our first Matariki public holiday, extensive upgrades to our water supply system, as well as the refurbishment of a range of community facilities. We also proudly hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup, bringing global attention and economic benefits to our city.
Our advancements in digital services, significant housing improvements and the adoption of strategic action plans further enhanced our city's heritage and live music scene.

2021
- Matariki Public Holiday & Mana Moana Celebrations: First Matariki public holiday and Mana Moana celebrations in Ōtepoti Dunedin, attracting thousands and boosting the local economy.
- Water Supply Upgrades: Government-funded upgrades in Sawyers Bay and northern supply network, improving reliability and firefighting capabilities.
- Smart Water Meters: Replacement of around 1000 smart water meters to prevent water wastage as part of an ongoing $7.8 million programme.
- Community Halls & Libraries: Upgrades to 12 community halls and libraries with Provincial Growth Fund assistance.
- Paemanu: Tauraka Toi Exhibition: Opening of a significant exhibition at Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
- Online Services: Introduction of online applications for building consents and dog registrations.

- Manatu Whakaaetaka Relationship Agreement: Signed to establish collaborative frameworks between local rūnaka and DCC.
- School Safety Transport Improvements: Enhancements around 16 schools for safer pedestrian routes and intersections.
- Community Housing Improvements: Refurbishment of 38 public housing units and construction of energy-efficient units.
- Digital Excellence (CODE): Support for local digital games development industry, creating jobs and studios.
- Community Grants: Over $1.64 million in DCC grants to community groups and events.
- Education Sessions: Targeted education for community and industry groups.

- FIFA Women’s World Cup: Co-hosted six matches, benefiting the city economically by $21.6 million.
- Te Puna o Whakaehu Pool: New public pool in Mosgiel with 32% more visitors than expected.
- Lan Yuan Chinese Garden: Achieved a six-star rating.
- Electric Book Bus: New accessible book bus supporting zero carbon goals.
- Action Plans: Adoption of Live Music and Heritage Action Plans.
- Parking Meter Upgrades: Transition to pay-by-plate system and removal of transaction fees.
- Shared Pathway Completion: Completion of Te Aka Ōtākou shared walking and cycle path.
- Housing Action Plan: Adoption of a plan to improve housing stock.
- Heritage Restoration: Award-winning restoration of Dunedin Railway Station.
- Future Development Strategy: Signed to ensure sufficient housing and business land for future growth.
- Fossil Site Purchase: Acquisition of Foulden Maar fossil site to preserve it.

- Kerbside Bins: Introduction of new bins for enhanced recycling and rubbish collection.
- George Street Upgrade: Creation of a people-friendly retail quarter.
- South Dunedin Library Construction: Beginning of construction for a new community complex.
- Forbury Park Purchase: Strategic acquisition for various council plans.
- UNESCO City of Literature: Celebrated 10 years with international events.
- Cultural Training: Successful cultural training for staff.
- Sister City Celebrations: Anniversaries with Otaru, Japan, and Shanghai, China.
- Rain Event Response: Effective response to October’s rain event.
- Taskforce Green: Delivery of voluntary labor supporting community and DCC work.
- Botanic Garden Playground: Refurbishment and reopening.
- Bath Street Pipe Upgrade: Continued replacement of degraded pipes. The wider project is due for completion at the end of 2025.
