A heavy rain watch has been issued for Dunedin and North Otago, and DCC staff and contractors are making all the preparations ahead of the expected downpour.
MetService predicts periods of heavy rain that may approach levels for a warning criteria overnight from 4am until 7pm Saturday, 4 October.
In anticipation, DCC staff and contractors have been making all the usual preparations when given advanced notification of heavy rain.
3 Waters staff have been checking stormwater infrastructure across the city and taking extra precaution in low-lying areas.
The DCC encourages people to check mud tanks near their homes and remove any leaves that have piled up as this can cause blockages and surface flooding.
The DCC is confident its infrastructure can cope with the heavy rain and it is unlikely to cause widespread problems, but there may be pockets of surface flooding.
Staff will be monitoring the situation and responding as necessary.
Residents can report any issues to the DCC to prioritise contractors to visit the site and address the problem.
Other things people can do to be prepared include:
- If your basement or garage is prone to flooding, lift items off the floor. Be sure garden sprays and other chemicals won’t be affected.
- Check mud tank grates near your house for blockages and keep them clear of leaves and other debris to avoid water building up and affecting your property.
