Advice on back yard sheds

If you’re keen to build a shed in your back yard, it’s important to know the rules first.

The DCC is raising awareness about the requirements for building sheds, so homeowners understand what’s allowed.

One of the most common problems occur when sheds are built too close to property boundaries. This can create issues such as shading neighbouring properties or increasing fire and safety risks, especially since sheds often store hazardous or flammable items.

Although some sheds up to 10 square metres in floor area can now be built directly on the boundary without a building consent, they must still comply with both the New Zealand Building Code and the District Plan (2GP).

The MBIE guidance document Building work that does not require a building consent includes a detailed section on Detached, Standalone Buildings, outlining what work is exempt and what other considerations you need to keep in mind.

Depending on the size of your shed and how close it is to the boundary, you may need a resource consent. Requirements vary depending on your district plan zone. For more planning information:

It's also a good idea to talk to your neighbours first so they are aware of your plans and avoid issues later (their approval may be required).
