Background

(1835-1905).  New Zealand suffragist.  Born in England, as a young woman Marion was involved in the temperance movement.  After her marriage to Joseph Hatton they immigrated to Dunedin and in 1892 chaired a meeting in Dunedin in support of Women’s Suffrage.  She became the principal speaker in the lower south and organised petitions to Parliament.  The Bill was passed on 8 September 1893 – Marion's birthday.  She continued to work on equality for women and was involved in the formation of the National Council of Women.
