Princes Street Connection

The Princes Street Connection Project is a three-year project that will deliver transport improvements along Princes Street to make the area safer and make bus journeys more efficient and reliable.

The project addresses safety issues reported by the community through consultation in 2022, particularly at intersections and for pedestrians. This work will be delivered in three stages, and alongside the improvements, there will be proposed changes to parking and road layouts. The community will have the chance to have their say and provide feedback on the proposed changes as part of public consultation on each stage of the project.

In 2021, Council adopted the projects included in the Shaping Future Dunedin Transport programme, including the Princes Street Connection Project. Through the 2025–34 Long Term Plan, the project was confirmed for delivery, with the stage one budget reconfirmed through Annual Plan deliberations on 27 May 2026. Following these decisions, staff are currently progressing delivery of the first stage.

Why are we doing this work?

Princes Street is Dunedin’s main public transport route between South Dunedin and the Central City, with a bus moving along it every few minutes. It’s a high-traffic area for pedestrians and the project addresses safety issues reported by our community, particularly at intersections and for pedestrians. It will also improve accessibility and the reliability and efficiency of our public transport, creating safer connections for everyone who uses Princes Street.

It’s important to make improvements now so we can keep things moving as the city grows and changes over time.

What are we doing?

The Princes Street Connection project will be delivered in three stages, stretching from King Edward Street to Moray Place. Construction is planned to begin in early 2027 and be completed by mid-2029. Alongside these improvements, there will be changes to parking and road layouts. The community will have the chance to have their say and provide feedback on these proposed changes as part of public consultation on each stage of the project.

  • Bus stop improvements and removal of redundant bus stops
  • Intersection narrowing of Lees Street, Jones Street and Melville Street
  • New angled parking on Maitland St, Lees Street and Jones Street
  • One-waying of Jones Street (proposed as part of consultation)
  • Changes to parking restrictions

Public consultation

We are asking for feedback on the proposed parking and bus stop changes, as well as the proposal to change Jones Street to one way. You can submit feedback until 11:59pm, 29 July, 2026.

Next steps

On 27 May 2026, Council re-confirmed the project for delivery through the Annual Plan deliberations :

Public consultation on proposed parking and bus stop changes to accommodate stage one improvements opens on 24 June and closes 29 July 2026.

Stage two – Andersons Bay Road to Stafford Street

  • Details to be confirmed, subject to funding confirmation and public consultation.

Stage three – Stafford Street to Moray Place

  • Details to be confirmed, subject to funding confirmation and public consultation.
  • Public feedback received

The public has told us that Princes Street can be unsafe and difficult to negotiate – especially for those who need to access the Oval or bus stops, those who walk and those who have disabilities.

In 2022, we asked you to tell us how you use Princes Street and how you’d like to see it changed in future. A summary of responses can be viewed in the Princes Street Connection Project Consultation Feedback Summary Report.

Taking account of these comments, we have now developed the first stage of proposed improvements for Princes Street.

Budget

Our 9 year plan has allocated $7,034,000 to the project across three financial years (2026/27 – 2028/29). This includes NZTA co-funding of 51%.
