We’re asking for the views of residents in the wider Dunedin area on our Reserves Management Plan General Policies (General Policies). Your feedback will help update our plan for reserve policies.
Why are we reviewing this?
Under the Reserves Act 1977, we’re required to regularly review and update reserve management plans. Our General Policies are 18 years old.
Why do we need General Policies for our reserves?
They will ensure the proper use, development, maintenance, protection and preservation of Dunedin’s more than 300 natural areas which include parks, reserves, sports grounds and other green spaces. They will allow us to respond to our community’s changing needs and introduce best practice models and trends.
What will General Policies include?
Direction for day-to-day management and practices across all parks and reserves administered by DCC e.g. leasing, events and signs.
General Policies also set clear objectives and directions for planning, management and maintenance of public open spaces for both Council staff and the public.
What won’t General Policies include?
- Parks outside the DCC’s boundary
- Bylaws
- Regional parks not owned by the DCC, including Department of Conservation-managed parks
- Concept plans for specific park developments.
Which parks are covered by General Policies?
All parks and reserves within the DCC’s boundary that are subject to the Reserves Act 1977. More than 300 natural areas are covered, including parks, reserves, sports grounds and other green spaces.
How does General Policies fit with other parks-specific reserve management plans e.g. RMPs for Logan Park and the Mosgiel Recreation Area?
- General Policies outline management policies for all parks and reserves within the city.
- Other parks-specific RMPs are to be read in conjunction with General Policies.
- If there is a conflict between the particular policies stated in other parks' RMPs and the General Policies, the specific policies found in the relevant RMPs of those parks will be given priority.
