Electricity distribution is an essential service, and the plan to sell Aurora is short sighted. The Council is thinking in terms of ten years, not generations. Yes Aurora is currently in debt (which is not insignificant), but it will increase in value over time and will once again be profitable in the future.
I wish our government hadn’t sold our power companies, our railway lines, our telecommunications company and our national bank, allowing offshore investors to make enormous profits at our expense. With just a little foresight these profits could have been kept for the benefit of domestic investors and taxpayers. Aurora provides an essential service, a service that we have no option but to pay for. I do not want to see the transfer of public wealth to private investors and control of this service lost to a multinational corporation.
