Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy

For 100 years or so, the network has always been a good provider of funds to the DCC & is only failing in that for now because of the maintenance catch up required due to profits for the DCC & cheap pricing being prioritised over keeping up with maintenance. Once the maintenance is complete, Aurora can then work on clearing the debt & once again be a good provider to the DCC. The citizens of Dunedin have already lost too many assets to out of town owners, to our detriment (Profits going elsewhere, factories like Cadburys & Fisher & Paykel closing down etc.). Selling off the network will also cause some or all staff jobs to be lost. Aurora's current focus of providing good service, reliability & value for money to the ratepayers/customers would be lost, with new owners only focusing on increasing profits. The current maintenance catch up costs will still be paid for by the customers, regardless of ownership. The DCC would have to pay the full cost of their line charges on their accounts, where now that money goes to the company they own, rather than someone else & the DCC will no longer have any say on what any new network owner does.
