My biggest concern is that this will make the books look good in the short-term, but cause issues in the long-term.
The absolute key priority from Aurora needs to be quality service. This is the city's electrical grid! The people of this city need access to electricity, and they ought to be receiving it as a public good, not a money-making scheme.
If Aurora is sold then the top priority will be making as much money as possible for investors. That means cutting costs wherever possible, extracting maximum value wherever possible. Providing the service is something done because they have to, while profits become the primary focus.
I do not believe for a moment that in 50 years time our electrical grid will be better off, or even anywhere near as good as current, if it is sold. This asset should remain in the hands of the people of Dunedin.
