Further comment
Please don't privatise Aurora Energy for the following reasons:
1. It will create a privately owned monopoly - the only interest its corporate owners will have is to extract the maximum value possible for its shareholders, this will reduce the resources available for capital investment (please see numerous examples of privatisation across the Western world)
2. It is highly likely that the new owner will be an offshore company with no interest in Dunedin's population and their needs - in any event there will be no public control over what the owner decides to do.
3. Please get over this aversion to public sector debt - it is entirely legitimate for the public sector to borrow for capital investment - it seems that this is being driven by the political inclinations of the current council; future more progressive councils will come to see this politicised driving down of debt and reduction in democratic control of key strategic services as a major mistake.
4. If it seen as necessary to take this debt off DCC's balance sheet please consider transfer of Aurora to a not for profit community based organisation.
