Further comment
I believe the core functions of the DCC are to support local residents, maintain council and community owned infrastructure and provide services to meet the future needs of the people of Dunedin. None of these core functions should extend to owning a power company, such as Aurora Energy, which isn’t paying its own way and would require further capital investment, via council backed debt just to make ends meet. Dunedin’s ratepayers shouldn’t be responsible for this type of debt, or be treated like an endless source of funding at a time when most ratepayers are struggling financially. In my opinion Aurora Energy needs to be owned by a larger NZ owned power company, which has the expertise, experience and capital backing to really make the positive difference required to take Aurora to the next step. The DCC simply doesn’t have the skills and resources at its disposal to undertake this type of work. In conclusion, I believe the sale of Aurora Energy would benefit ratepayers far more than continued council ownership, so I support the sale of this asset as proposed. Kind regards Jared
