Privatisation of assets leads to disinvestment in the assets. This is because the responsibility of the the private company is to the share holders to pay dividends, not to the public to provide a good service. For example, all water was privatised in the UK and there has not been sufficient investment in infrastructure (and not a single new reservoir despite population growth) in 30 years, since privatisation. This is particularly pertinent in the case of Aurora, which is essentially an entity providing infrastructure. It is therefore in the interest of Dunedin ratepayers to keep Aurora, not necessarily as a money-making business, but as a key service provider that we cannot afford to privatise.
