Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
I strongly object to the sale of Aurora Energy. The sale would involve the loss of Council control of an asset created by and for the people of Otago. Although Aurora's sale may provide some immediate financial relief and an uncertain return on the invested proceeds, the result will be that Otago rate payers lose out on the long term benefits of owning the investment. The obvious question is, if other - possibly overseas - investors see Aurora as a worthy financial investment, why sell it? A sale is especially problematic when Aurora's ownership confers more than it's purely future financial value to Otago. I would much prefer that the Council hold onto ownership of such assets and navigate through their current difficulties by other means. The Council needs to take a long-term view of the benefits of owning such infrastructure, financial and otherwise, despite the difficulties this may present in the short to medium term.
