We have a continuing history in this country of local and central government selling off core assets to private companies who then run these assets commercially for shareholder profit. This exercise is a one-off cash grab which will only make us all poorer in the long-term by having to pay commercial rates for what was once a basic public service made available to all.
We have already had a history of under investment in the Aurora network by Dunedin City Holdings for shareholder benefit (DCC). This under investment would only be made worse if Aurora was sold to a commercial bidder.
What happens if a purchaser of Aurora decides their investment is not economically viable and runs it into the ground?
I am strongly against option One.
