Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
I object to the DCC proposal to sell Aurora.
AURORA is owned by the Central Otago public. It is responsible for building, owning and maintaining electric powerlines through Central Otago. It is obliged to provide a reliable service including maintenance of the powerlines for the benefit of its captive customers.
AURORA and other such businesses must stay in public ownership. They must not be expected to make unrealistic profits or pay dividends to either the DCC or any potential private business or investor.
The excessive dividends AURORA had to pay to the DCC resulted in the company not having the necessary funds to pay to do its maintenance work properly.
To protect AURORA from such demands I want to see the company wholly owned by a public Trust who is directly responsible to the whole community.
A number of Lines Companies in New Zealand are owned by public Trusts.
