I urge our Council to vote against the sale of our electricity distribution company Aurora. This essential service should be retained in public ownership and should not expected to make a profit. Selling Aurora would simply move ongoing costs directly onto the citizens of Dunedin, via the new owners, in return for a short term reduction in rates or unknown future income, and as we have seen, financial investments can fall as well as rise.
We may be struggling to balance the budget but selling the furniture and hoping the new owner will still let us sit on the couch seems short-sighted in the extreme.
I note that the wording of this page appears to favour the option of sale and I question the use of phrases such as 'many hundreds of millions of dollars", which is entirely unfounded.
