Further comment
I'm opposed to the sale of Aurora. It is a public asset for a reason, providing an essential service that few others are willing to provide in the marketplace, i.e., power line services. It is an asset that has been built up and supported by generations of Dunedin residents in the past. Despite the Commerce Commission's pricing protections (given that it is a monopoly), I'm not so sure as any new owners will be lobbying the them post sale about the need to increase charges to recoup the company's debts and return sufficient dividends to them. Electricity is an essential service and one that has not always been provided at the lowest price or most efficiently by the private market. Besides, who and what are we as a city if we don't even have own/hold democratic controll over the most essential services? I personally, would rather pay higher rates towards the DCC than higher power bills towards a privately owned power company.
