Further comment
As an electricity distributor, Aurora Energy is responsible for ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is in place to meet the electricity needs of the communities in Dunedin and Central Otago. This involves significant capital and operational expenses. I firmly believe that these costs should be fairly balanced with the expenses passed on to consumers, with a focus on keeping electricity affordable and accessible as a public service. It's important to emphasise that electricity is a vital public utility and should not be seen solely as a means of making profit. It is an essential service that plays a crucial role in the daily lives and economic activities of residents. Therefore, any surplus funds should be reinvested back into the network to improve reliability, safety, and sustainability, and to limit cost increases rather than being given out as dividends to the DCC. Additionally, it's worth noting that the council's financial support is appropriately recognised through interest costs.
