Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
I am concerned that any short term gain from selling Aurora will be at the expense of power consumers in the long term. Also if the amount that can be charged is under a tight regime via the Commerce Commission, then why would a private company a) want to purchase it in the first place and b) invest sufficient in the company’s infrastructure long term. Affordable electricity is an absolute necessity for the entire city. We can’t afford to gamble with this asset and owe it to future generations.
I am also concerned that council will fritter any money away from a sale of Aurora on “feel good” projects such as cycleways, playgrounds in the mainstreet. The council seem very apt at buying property such as Sammys and Forbury without any clear vision or purpose.
Why can't the council investigate selling other nonessential facilities such as the stadium which run at a loss and are not what I consider to be essential services. I would like the council to prioritise services such as reliable electricity, sewerage and water supply, refuse removal etc. In tight financial times music venues, entertainment and even playgrounds are frills and not essential services. Finally why does Aurora NEED to pay dividends??? Electricity is a public good!
