Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
I am a Central Otago power user/customer.
Originally as a Central Electric customer I contributed to the lines assets through my power bill. When these assets were sold to Aurora I then went back to scratch and commenced to pay for them again. If a sale was to go through I will have to start and pay for them a third time. (My Grandparents assisted in underwriting the cost of the original power network in 1939-40).
You say these assets are run down this was mostly caused when the Dunedin City Council demanded a profit from Aurora (some of which they had to borrow) when a portion of any profit made should have been spent on essential maintenance and upgrades.
If a company like Aurora running monopoly on an essential service cannot make a profit I suggest you have the wrong people managing it.
What will happen if you sell this cash cow and pay off debt, then in a few years councils again start excessive borrowing and end up in the same position as now, without any advantage of this money making asset.
Sort out your mess by other means based on sound business practice with councils now and in the future living within their means. It will be a new experience for some of your councillors.
I do not wish to speak but ask the councillors or panel read this carefully, absorb its contents and carefully weigh it up against other arguments.
