The sale of Aurora is a false saving on the debt of the utility. The investment in the infrastructure needed will still need to be paid whether it is in public or private ownership. Private ownership will simply pass on the cost of this in power bill charges to the retailer that will recoup it from the citizens of Dunedin. Aurora is a natural monopoly that when restored to proper functionality will provide a healthy return without overcharging the public.
Privatisation of a public utility has not in one instance provided a better outcome for the public.
