Further comment
The sale of Aurora Energy is a narrowminded and shortsighted option. It would be a short-term gain with no guarantee that the ratepayers will see any benefit from it (reduction in future rates nor prevent future increases). The electrical infrastructure (Aurora) is an ever-growing asset that cannot be replaced or reacquired. Investing in the infrastructure equates to investing in the community & Dunedin, ensuring its sustainability, wellbeing and enabling future growth. Any profits (dividend or not) are indirectly returned to the ratepayers of Dunedin if invested in the electrical network. Any ownership other than the DCC or local community cannot guarantee re-investment in the community as funds (profits) will be utilised elsewhere. Aurora is a profitable company with a license to print money in future as its value grows. Unfortunately, Aurora’s history and its legacy is haunted by bad decisions of the DCC. The sale of Aurora was not on the table during any of the councillors’ 2022 campaign. The councillors in favour of the decision to sell Aurora will not be in power when the repercussions of the sale is evident. The current councilors cannot be trusted and do not have the interests of the ratepayers in mind or at heart.
