Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
The DCC's proposal to sell Aurora Energy has sparked intense debate, and rightfully so. As ratepayers, we must scrutinize the decision-making process and question whether our elected representatives truly have our best interests at heart.
Over the last decade, and of late even more so, we’ve witnessed the council selling off valuable assets—our “silver”—without always considering the long-term consequences. The lack of trust in councillors’ ability to make sound decisions when faced with financial pressures is palpable. We’ve been burned before, and now we hesitate to place our faith in their judgment.
The recent 13-1 vote by councillors to seek public opinion on selling Aurora Energy speaks volumes. Only one dissenting voice stood against this proposal. It’s a stark reminder that our elected officials are not infallible. We must question whether they truly represent our collective will or if they’re swayed by other factors.
Arguments for selling Aurora focus on the lack of dividends and the allure of a diversified investment fund. But what about Aurora’s untapped potential? Its capital value is projected to rise, and dividends could become consistent. Selling now denies us these long-term benefits. Are councillors prioritizing our future or chasing immediate gains?
Significant financial details, including a possible asking price, were redacted from the public report. Transparency matters. When vital information is withheld, it erodes trust. We deserve clarity on how our assets are valued and whether the sale genuinely reflects market conditions.
Given the lack of trust, it’s time to consider a vote of no confidence. If councillors persist in pushing for Aurora’s sale despite public opposition, perhaps they no longer deserve the privilege of governing. Our community’s well-being should always come first. If they fail us, we must explore avenues to remove them from power.
We demand accountability, transparency, and genuine representation. Aurora Energy isn’t just a company—it’s our shared future. We must ensure that those in power truly serve us, the people they were elected to represent.
