I would like council to retain ownership of Aurora energy and seek alternative funding tools to achieve improved income certainty. We have previously seen private sector purchases of public assets under maintain and asset strip these to maximize profits rather than operate on a sustainable long term footing with sufficient maintenance and renewals. I am deeply concerned about the impacts if the sale of Aurora results in the running down of the assets and future uncertainty of electricity distribution within the region.
All councils in NewZealand are struggling with escalating costs and limited revenue tools. I encourage DCC to work with other councils and lobby government to give local government improved tools address concerns around council reliable income streams and managing long term debt.
